Florida man tells police he was going 125 mph to "impress his girlfriend"

A man was arrested after being clocked driving more than 100 mph and telling police he was speeding to impress his girlfriend.

Around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, 19-year-old Angelo Donnelly was observed by Florida Highway Patrol driving more than 100 mph on Interstate 95 in Brevard County.

Troopers caught Donnelly attempting to overtake a vehicle in the left lane of northbound I-95 in Melbourne, kicking up debris from the shoulder and nearly colliding with the vehicle he was passing.

A trooper was conducting speed enforcement in the median, when he used a laser to determine Donnelly was driving 112 mph, before accelerating up to 125 mph.

Donnelly was pulled over and placed under arrest.

The 19-year-old told the trooper he was speeding and driving erratically because he was showing off for his girlfriend, who was following him in a separate vehicle.

Donnelly was booked at the Brevard County jail.

He faces a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving.
