Mary O'Connor Sworn In As Tampa Police Chief

After a confirmation process that was sometimes contentious, Mary O' Connor has taken the oath of office as Tampa's new police chief. In a ceremony at police headquarters this morning, O' Connor thanked friends, family, and those who supported her. And she promised to work every day to make the police department better. "A key step in doing that," O' Connor said, "is creating a team approach and doing this together. We are going to work together as one to bring this police department to the next level to serve this fine city."

O' Connor was nominated to the post by mayor Jane Castor in February. "Since I announced that Mary O' Connor would be our next chief of police six weeks ago," the mayor said, "she has gone about proving each and every day that she is, indeed, the best person to lead the Tampa Police Department."

O' Connor acknowledged the mayor's remarks, saying "I will make you proud."
