Tampa Police Chief Criticizes Actions of Teens Involved in Deadly Crash

More information is coming out this afternoon about a deadly weekend crash brought on by the actions of four teens, one as young as 12.

Tampa police chief Mary O' Connor says the teens stole a car, then led officers on a high-speed pursuit toward Plant City that ended when they rear-ended a car, knocking it into a telephone pole. A 44-year-old woman was killed in the impact, while another victim remains in critical condition.

"This is no video game," O'Connor said. "This is real life with real lives at stake. And this time, these juveniles' actions caused an innocent person her life."

O'Connor said charges against the four teens are still pending from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, which is now leading the investigation into the crash. As a result, none of the teens is in custody at this point.

O'Connor also said the officer was justified in pursuing the teens. "He recognized it as a stolen vehicle that was used to also commit at least one auto burglary."
