Former UM Hurricane accused of killing teammate granted bond

A former University of Miami football player accused of killing a teammate was granted bond during a court hearing on Wednesday.

Rashaun Jones was arrested last year, nearly 15 years after the death of teammate Bryan Pata outside of a South Florida apartment complex.

Jones is facing a second-degree murder charge in the killing of Pata.

Jones was in court Wednesday for the third day of an Arthur Hearing where a judge granted him the $850,000 bond.

It was unknown when or if he'll be posting bond.

Prosecutors argued that Jones should remain behind bars without bond until his trial, but defense attorneys argued for a bond because some of the witness testimony was known to police after the killing but an arrest wasn't made until last year.

Pata was expected to be an early pick in the 2007 NFL draft following his final season with the Hurricanes.

The defensive lineman was shot and killed outside of his Kendall apartment the night of November 7th, 2006.

Investigators learned through interviews that Pata and Jones had several confrontations prior to the shooting, including a threat made by Jones that he was going to shoot Pata two months before his death.

During interviews with detectives, Jones told investigators that he was home the night of Pata’s death and never left.

According to authorities, cell phone records show that Jones’ cellphone was using different cell towers around the time of the shooting.

Jones has entered a not guilty plea to the charge.
