Central Florida woman was attacked by a black bear while walking dog.

A mother black bear was killed by state wildlife officers after attacking a woman out walking her dog Thursday night in DeBary in Volusia County. The woman was treated at the scene for injuries to her hands, face and back. The dog wasn't harmed. The mother bear was killed under the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's policy to protect the public after such incidents.

The bear's three 100 pound yearlings were nearby but no attempt was made to capture them. Biologists determined they were old enough to survive on their own.

The FWC says if you come upon a bear, don't make any sudden moves. "Back up slowly and speak to the bear in a calm, assertive voice," the agency says. "If you see a bear from a distance, enjoy the experience, but don't not move toward the bear."

The FWC's Wildlife Alert Hotline to report potentially dangerous bears is 888-404-FWCC.
