NEW PORT RICHEY -- Governor Ron DeSantis says his state will fight any attempt by the federal government to mandate vaccines for non-federal workers.
Speaking at an event promoting monoclonal antibodies, the governor says threatening people with their jobs will backfire. DeSantis argues that even if individuals who decide not to get a COVID-19 shot are wrong, they shouldn't get fired over that choice. The governor also believes that the federal government doesn't have the authority to compel vaccinations among workers in the private sector, and that a vaccine mandate would "alienate" those who haven't gotten the shot.
Thursday afternoon, President Biden announced a plan that would require either vaccinations or once a week testing for workers at companies with more than 100 employees. The plan will also require federal workers and workers at hospitals participating in Medicare and Medicaid to get shots. Biden is also calling on large entertainment venues and stadiums to require proof of vaccination or testing for entry.
