The Boca Raton City Council has passed a building recertification program.
The newly adopted ordinance that passed Tuesday night means that certain buildings that are 30 years old or older must submit for recertification and undergo safety inspections.
The process will repeat itself every 10 years for buildings that are over 50 feet tall, or larger than 5,000 square feet, or have more than 500 residents.
Owners would have six months to conduct any repairs that may be needed.
City leaders say that after the Surfside condo collapse, they didn't want to wait for the county to pass a plan. Notices will start going out within a few months.
The County Commission last week decided to table its proposal for two months.
