Amid reports of concerns about a crossing guard shortage in Martin County, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw says it's a different situation here. They do still have some openings, but no school zones will be left unattended.
"It's important because they're taking care of our children getting across these streets. So it's important for us to have all of the posts manned. Now if we don't have enough, we'll man them with some of our CSA's that are on the road, the Community Service Aides. But we'll make sure that the places that have to have crossing guards have somebody there."
Anyone interested in working as a crossing guard can apply online. PBSO cites an excellent starting salary with cost of living increases.
Meanwhile, the sheriff joins other local law enforcement officials in urging drivers to watch their speeds in those school zones.
"This is kind of like at Halloween...the kids ain't paying attention to the traffic. You have to pay attention to the kids. They're talking to each other. Some of them are probably texting on their cell phone. So, you've gotta be cognizant of the speed limit and the kids. Don't rely on them to see you."
He says deputies WILL ticket those who speed near schools.
