Venice Couple Arrested After Toddler Consumes Cocaine

VENICE -- Sarasota county deputies have arrested a couple after an incident in which a 21-month-old boy consumed cocaine earlier this year.

The Sheriff's Office says that on the afternoon of January 8th, they responded to a home along Park Road to assist paramedics, who were dealing with an unconscious child who wasn't breathing.

Their arrest report says Kaitlyn Van Dorn, then 32, told first responders the child picked up something off the ground and put it in his mouth when they went on a walk, stumbling and becoming limp before passing out. The report says Van Dorn told detectives the child had a teal bucket to pick up rocks. The teal bucket was found but a spoon inside tested positive for fentanyl and cocaine. Detectives also found a crack pipe in the home.

Paramedics gave the toddler three doses of a medication to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. The child quickly revived and was taken to a hospital.

Detectives found holes in Van Dorn's story and charged her and 34-year-old Blake Pavey with child neglect. They say the child could have died from that drug overdose. The boy hasn't lived with the couple since the original incident.
