Breakthrough COVID infections are popping up in Central Florida

Dozens of people in Florida are reporting they've been infected with COVID-19 even though they've been fully vaccinated.

The state Department of Health has documented 26 of the so-called breakthrough cases in Lake County and 6 each in Volusia and Sumter counties.

Dr. Timothy Hendrix of AdventHealth says it is possible for someone who is fully vaccinated to still get the virus because the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are just 95-percent effective, but he says it's still important to get the shot because it prevents more severe cases, including hospitalization and death.

Health officials are also recommending that people who have been vaccinated continue to wear face coverings because researchers are still trying to determine if those who have been vaccinated can spread the virus to other people.
