LISTEN: Sarasota College Students Put Oars in the Water

Listen to an interview with Toni Ginsburg-Klemmt:

SARASOTA -- Out of state universities send their rowing teams to train in Florida during the spring. But among Florida schools, the sport isn't as popular, despite mostly good weather. A student at a Sarasota college decided to change that.

Antonia "Toni" Ginsberg-Klemmt is founder and first coach of "New Crew S-R-Q", a rowing club based at New College, which is the state university system's honors school. "When I came to New College, I was like 'why is there no collegiate rowing in Sarasota, it just baffled me, the rowing capital of the United States.'"

She hopes the crew will eventually compete with out of area school teams.

Ginsburg-Klemmt says the COVID-19 pandemic hasn't stopped her efforts. "We're still dealing with safety precautions... but luckily, Covid is a non-contact sport."

New Crew SRQ's home base is Nathan Benderson Park, considered one of the best public aquatic parks in the nation and site of many competitive aquatic events.
