Benjamin Franklin Project Helping Florida Kids Learn Civics

Imagine Benjamin Franklin teaching your kids about civics.

That's virtually happening in schools across the state, with the help of a non-profit called Step-Up America.

The Vero Beach organization uses an avatar of the bespectacled fore father to give interactive lessons in elementary school classrooms.

The character is voiced by Mark Renehan, who says the program matches up with what Ron DeSantis wants.

"Like the governor of Florida stated U.S. History and U.S. Civics are something that we need to get back into and I feel that this is one of the easiest, simplest ways to do it."

He says "Ben Franklin" has been exposed to thousands of kids in schools and summer camps and they plan to expand to include avatars of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and others, if they can gather enough funding.

The governor last month announced a $5 million donation will go towards civics education in our state.
