Fireworks Bill Moves Through Florida Legislature, Heads To Senate Floor

Fireworks for the Fourth of July

A bill allowing Floridians to legally set off fireworks on New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and Independence Day makes a boom in Tallahassee.

The State Senate Rules Committee has cleared the measure... sending it to the floor for a vote.

Currently any firework that shoots in the air and explodes is illegal, but people can sign waivers saying they're going to use them for agriculture purposes.

Due to concerns by opponents of the bill over an increased risk of wild fires, senators amended the bill, leaving off Memorial Day from the list of approved days when purchasing fireworks would be legal.

That's because of the dry season, but the move may have made veterans and those who have lost loved ones in the armed forces happy anyway, because Memorial Day is not viewed as a day of celebration, but remembrance of those who died fighting for our freedom.

The House version of the bill still has to go through one more committee before making it to the floor of that chamber.
