It probably comes as no surprise to those of us who live here, but Florida has been named the number one Best State to Retire by Wallethub.

"We looked at almost 50 different metrics in all. Weather and taxes certainly up there."

Analyst Jill Gonzalez says Florida's tax-friendly status is a big part of it.

"Not only general tax-friendliness but for retirees, very tax friendly when it comes to pensions, Social Security, estate or inheritance taxes as well."

The high number of retirees already living here weighed large on the rankings.

"Right now it has the second highest share of the population ages 65 and up. Only Maine has more of an elderly population."

More people ages 65 and over not only makes it better for social purposes, but also helps in other areas.

"So when it comes to things, especially like healthcare...more physicians, more home health aides per capita."

Our state scores the best in Affordability and Quality of Life, but below average in metrics related to Healthcare on the

Another recent survey put Florida at 9th best place to retire, while looking at far fewer metrics.
