Homeowner's Huge Christmas Light Show Reopens Friday in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG -- One of the largest private home Christmas displays in Florida, or the country, reopens Friday in St. Petersburg.

Ted Kresge, now in his 70s, has been running the Oakdale Christmas Light Display since 1977. He turns his home and property into a half-acre concentrated light show, with more than 600,000 lights.

The roof of the house has four giant Christmas trees made of lights, as well as a collection of inflatables that includes a three story snowman.

The electric bill runs into several thousand dollars, and it takes Kresge three months to put up and three more to take down.

Kresge says the motivation to keep up his annual Christmas light show is to get people focused away from commercialism and back to the original meaning of Christmas. His display includes a manger scene with more than 150 pieces.

Kresge says he intends to continue the annual tradition "until the Lord calls me home."
