A former South Florida school principal who questioned the Holocaust is expected to be fired on Wednesday.
In an email to a parent last year, William Latson wrote “I can’t say the holocaust is a factual, historical event because I am not in a position to do so as a school district employee."
That email surfaced last summer and that's when Latson was reassigned from his post at Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, but remains an employee.
"It's not an opinion that you're weighing in on about global warming or gun control. The brutal murder of 6 million, the attempted extermination of our people is undeniable historically and to suggest that there's any ambiguity in that is morally reprehensible."
Efrem Goldberg is the Senior Rabbi at the Boca Raton Synagogue. He likens it to this...
"How would we feel about an educator being politically neutral about slavery and its impact?"
Goldberg says it could fire up neo-Nazis.
"Imagine what that does for the Holocaust-denier to know that somebody in such a prominent position of education, of molding young minds, puts into an email to a parent that he can't take a position on the Holocaust?"
He says Latson should have been fired immediately, something echoed by State Representative Mike Caruso, whose been a vocal critic of Latson.
"I've got to say it's about time. The Holocaust is a fact and the fact is it's time for Latson to go. It's already taken too long."
The recommendation to terminate Latson's employment will be given to the Palm Beach County School Board during its meeting Wednesday and it comes after an internal investigation found "just cause."
Schools Superintendent Dr. Donald Fennoy says that if the board approves his recommendation, Latson's termination will take effect on November 21. He'll have until November 20 to appeal to the Department of Labor Relations.
