The jury that convicted Markeith Loyd is deciding his punishment.

The Orlando jury that convicted Markeith Loyd of murdering his pregnant ex-girlfriend and her unborn child last week is back in court this week deciding his punishment. Defense attorney Terry Lenamon this morning urged the jury to spare his client's life.

"Markeith Loyd is dying in prison by your verdict, without question," Lenamon said. "The only thing today or tomorrow or Wednesday that you have to decide is whether the government, the state of Florida, takes his life."

Loyd's mother was on the stand Monday, asking for leniency. When Patricia Loyd was asked if she loved her son she said, 'very much so.' She also said if he goes to prison she would visit him and that she would always be in his life.

Loyd says her son became paranoid after his first stint in prison and said he "struggled to hold focus" on being Markeith. The jury will recommend a sentence of either death or life in prison without parole.

After this trial is done, Loyd will then face charges for the shooting death of Orlando Police Lieutenant Debra Clayton.
