Short-Term Fix Restores Water Service to Much of Fort Lauderdale

UPDATE: A local state of emergency is still in effect for Ft. Lauderdale and several surrounding cities after a water main break forced the city to issue a state of emergency and shut down businesses.

The areas being affected by this water emergency are Fort Lauderdale and parts of Port Everglades, Oakland Park, Davie, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Sea Ranch Lakes, Tamarac and Wilton Manors. These cities are all under a boil water advisory as well.

A statement released from Mayor Dean Trantalis says, "City crews are working as fast as possible to restore service. If everything goes well, we could have water available by this evening. In the meantime, we have launched emergency procedures and have set up locations to offer bottled water to any residents in need. We have issued a boil water notice in accordance with state and federal regulatory requirements. It is imperative that folks in the affected areas boil their water prior to consuming it. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. If you still have water service, we urge everyone to limit use. Please turn off all irrigation systems and only use water when absolutely necessary."

Locations have been opened for distribution of bottled water at the following addresses:

  • Beach Community Center 3351 NE 33 Ave., Fort Lauderdale
  • Mills Pond Park 2201 NW 9 Ave., Fort Lauderdale
  • Riverland Park 950 SW 27 Ave., Fort Lauderdale (OUT OF WATER)
  • Grieco Ford Fort Lauderdale, 1333 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale (Y100 - 7:30p Thurs.)

For more information please call the City of Fort Lauderdale 24-Hour Neighbor Service Center at 954-828-8000.

EARLIER: A local state of emergency is declared as some 220-thousand residents in Fort Lauderdale and surrounding cities are without water after a water main break near the Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport. City officials said customers could be without water - and thus, without working toilets - for the next 24 to 36 hours. Mayor Dean Trantalis says the city issued a boil-water order water advisory so if you have water, boil it for one minute before using it for things such as brushing your teeth or washing dishes. The outage will impact Fort Lauderdale -and parts of Port Everglades, Oakland Park, Davie, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Sea Ranch Lakes, Tamarac and Wilton Manors.
