Florida Sheriff's Office Loses Law Enforcement Accreditation

The Broward County Sheriff's Office has lost its law enforcement accreditation in the wake of its handling of the Parkland school shooting.

The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation has voted unanimously to not renew the agency's accreditation.

The commission cites BSO's handling of last year's massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the 2017 shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as reasons for the decision.

The accreditation means an agency meets more than 250 professional standards.

News of the Sheriff's Office losing its accreditation came on the same day that the former Sheriff Scott Israel filed his paperwork to run again in 2020. Israel was suspended by Gov. DeSantis and is waiting to hear back from the state Senate on whether he will be reinstated.
