Most Florida Republicans in Congress Reject Dreamer Bill

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House passed a bill aimed at giving Dreamers... those brought here illegally as children... a chance at citizenship. Out of 14 Republicans in Florida's delegation 13 voted no... including Central Florida's Ross Spano.

Spano says he can't support a bill that doesn't address the situation at the southern border. "The bill that was passed does nothing to address (the border crisis) and... would only make it worse, because it incentivizes people to get over here as quickly as they can," Spano said.

Spano, a freshman elected last November, says House Democrats are not addressing the border situation and President Trump isn't getting cooperation on that issue. He also objects to a provision granting permanent status to people here on TPS visas. Spano says "Temporary Protected Status" means just that, and was never intended to allow those visa recipients, often people who suffered after natural disasters, to remain here for good.

South Florida's Mario Diaz-Balart was the only Florida Republican to vote yes on the Dream and Promise Act.
