Coconut Grove Playhouse's Future May End Up In Court

The fight for the future of the Coconut Grove Playhouse will continue as Miami Commissioners today failed to override Mayor Gimenez's decision to reject the county's proposal to renovate the long-shuttered Coconut Grove Playhouse.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez stood in front of the Miami Commission this morning trying to convince members the county's fully-funded plan to replace the auditorium with a smaller theater while preserving the historic facade, is the only logical solution.

The Commission voted 3-2 to override the veto, but a 4-1 vote was needed.

With no plan in place, the playhouse could go back under state control.

The Mayor's veto stands but the county could take the case to court.
