WASHINGTON DC (WFLA News) -- Veterans of World War Two, the Korean War and the Vietnam War from Polk County received special recognition this week.

They took an Honor Flight from Lakeland Linder airport to Washington DC. Bay area congressman Ross Spano met them on their tour of the nation's capital.

"We had 87 veterans and their sponsors that visited monuments in DC.. . the energy and encouragement I get when I meet some of these heroes (is amazing), " Spano said.

Wednesday's event was the fifth flight sponsored by Flight to Honor Polk, a non profit organization which has sent 600 veterans to Washington.
