Lightning Fall To Red Wings In Second Game Of Back To Back

The Tampa Bay Lightning (43-20-6) fell to the Detroit Red Wings (17-48-5) 5-4 in the shootout on Sunday evening in Detroit.

The Red Wings scored in the first period when Robby Fabbri made it 1-0. Tampa Bay got goals in the second period from Brayden Point and Carter Verhaeghe to take a lead before Dylan Larkin scored to tie the game with fifteen seconds to go in the second period.

Tied 2-2, the Red Wings tried to take control of this game in the early portion of the third period. First Anthony Mantha scored at the 1:41 mark before Tyler Bertuzzi scored at the 4:24 mark to take a 4-2 lead. Tampa Bay would answer with Brayden Point's second goal under two minutes later to show they were not done. Then, at the 11:19 mark, Pat Maroon scored to tie the game and make it 4-4.

That would remain the score throughout the remainder of the third period, and the game would go to overtime with that score. Neither team was able to get a goal in overtime either, as Curtis McElhinney went 24-for-28 in net for the Lightning. Jonathan Bernier went 33-for-37 in net for the Red Wings as each team played into the shootout.

In the shootout, Mikhail Sergachev scored in the first round to take an early 1-0 lead. After Curtis McElhinney stopped Sam Gagner to conclude the first round, Brayden Point was denied by Jonathan Bernier in the second round. Dylan Larkin was able to come through to tie the shootout and end the second round. After Nikita Kucherov was unable to convert in the second round, Robby Fabbri was able to convert the game winner that ended the shootout 2-1 and the game 5-4.

Tampa Bay wraps up their three game road trip on Tuesday as they head to Toronto to battle the Maple Leafs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 on News Radio WFLA.
