Vasilevskiy Struggles As Bolts Fall To Stars In OT

Last year we saw Andrei Vasilevskiy win games for the Bolts where the play of the rest of the team wasn’t great. Thursday night was the exact opposite. The Tampa Bay Lightning dominated the majority of the game, but after 2 goals that Vasilevskiy would likely love to have back, the game was tied at 3 with less than 5 minutes remaining. The Bolts couldn't overcome Vasy's struggles in overtime. Tyler Seguin scored the game winner as the Lightning fell 4-3 to the stars.

The Bolts looked like they would get off to a hot start early on Thursday night. Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov both had good chances on net within the 1st 2 minutes of the game, but neither could get the puck past Anton Khudobin. The early momentum for the Lightning was quickly reversed when Carter Veraeghe was called for tripping. Alexander Radulov scored his 10th goal of the season during the power play to give his team the early advantage. The Lightning got their 1st power play chance moments later, but came up empty. They quickly gained the man advantage again after Radulov got sent off for hooking. This time the Lightning were able to get the equalizer. That equalizer came off the stick of Mikhail Sergachev just shy of the 13 minute mark in the period. The Bolts power play unit found themselves on the ice again minutes later after the Stars got caught with too many men on the ice. 23 seconds later Alex Killorn scored his 10th goal of the season off of a beautiful feed from Nikita Kucherov to give Tampa Bay the lead.

The momentum for the Bolts continued in the 2nd period. Tampa Bay had the puck in the Dallas zone in the opening moments of the frame and cashed in just after the 3 minute mark when Ondrej Palat scored his 10th goal of the season. The Lightning continued to absolutely dominate the middle frame. Tampa Bay even had a 31-12 shots on goal advantage at one point. The Stars 13th shot cut the lead in half though. Radek Faksa got one past Vasilevskiy that the Bolts goaltender would probably like to have back.

Yanni Gourde found himself alone in front of the Dallas net early in the 3rd, but he was denied by Khudobin. Khudobin continued to stand on his head to keep his team in the game and the deficit at a single goal. That performance payed off. Jason Dickinson got the puck past Vasy to tie things up with 4:18 remaining in regulation. That goal would send the game to overtime.

The Bolts will be back in action on Saturday night. Tampa Bay will head to our Nation’s Capital to take on Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. The puck is slated to drop shortly after 7 pm and you can hear it all on news radio WFLA.
