Islanders Score Three In The Third As Lightning Fall 5-1

@jayRecher

Add tonight's game to the list of why Mondays stink.

Brock Nelson scored a pair of goals and Semyon Varlamov made 31 saves as the visiting New York Islanders defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1 on Monday night at Amalie Arena.

Neither team scored in the first, but things were much different in the second period.

After Cory Conacher came down and couldn't convert on a breakaway against Varlamov, the Islanders countered with a goal from an unlikely source.

Ross Johnston, who had only one point and thirty-five penalty minutes coming into the game, came down the right wing and snapped one past Curtis McElhinney to give New York a 1-0 lead.

It was a very physical game throughout. Conacher and the Islanders Cal Clutterbuck got into a wrestling match in the New York crease in the 1st period. Then in the second, Cedric Paquette and Scott Mayfield were whistled for coincidental minors after Mayfield picked up a cross-checking penalty on Nikita Kucherov.

On the ensuing penalty the Lightning looked to find the equalizer, but it was the Islanders who cashed in.

Tampa Bay had a 4-on-2 rush heading into the zone, but the puck got knocked away and New York's Josh Bailey was sprung for a breakaway. He was very patient, made a quick deke, and beat McElhinney to the stick-side to double the Islanders lead.

To the Lightning's credit, they kept grinding and eventually cut New York's advantage in half.

Following some good forechecking from Alex Killorn and Anthony Cirelli, Kevin Shattenkirk found Steven Stamkos in front and the Captain backhanded one past a sprawling Varlamov to get Tampa Bay on the board.

The Bolts pushed for the tying goal to start the third, but the Islanders defense did a nice job blocking shots in front and keeping the Lightning offense to the outside.

At 7:31, Nelson scored the heartbreaker after a bad bounce off the skate of Tampa Bay defenseman Luke Schenn and all momentum was lost. Nelson scored again at 14:41 and Anders Lee added a goal on the man-advantage with just under four minutes to go to seal the deal for the Islanders.

McElhinney stopped 19 of the 24 shots he saw on the evening.

MITCHELL IS IN THE BUILDING : 22 Year Old Mitchell Stephens was a -2 but did have some good moments, including a strong shift early in the first period to draw a tripping call on New York defenseman Adam Pelech.
