Lightning Storm Back To Defeat Devils 7-6 In Overtime

Tyler Johnson scored 1:16 into overtime, Ondrej Palat scored a pair of goals and Curtis McElhinney made 36 saves as the Lightning came back from a two-goal deficit in the third to defeat the Devils 7-6 on Wednesday night in New Jersey.

Tampa Bay trailed 5-3 after Sami Vatanen's goal just 1:13 into the third, but the Bolts did not break.

Anthony Cirelli, who coach Jon Cooper wasn't sure was going to play until right before the game, scored 1:32 after the Vatanen goal, and then assisted on a goal by Mathieu Joseph exactly five minutes later to tie the score at five.

Palat's second goal came with just under four minutes to play and the Lightning defense did all they could to cling to a one-goal lead.

Unfortunately for Tampa Bay, Kyle Palmieri scored his third goal of the evening with 7.4 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Fortunately for Tampa Bay, Johnson scored the game-winner 76 seconds into the extra period to give the Lightning the victory. Cooper said that the line of Palat, Johnson and Brayden Point was the team's best on this wild and crazy game at the Prudential Center.

The big issue the last few games for the Lightning has been the amount of penalties they've taken.

It didn't take long for them to commit their first on Wednesday night and the Devils made them pay.

Just 37 seconds after a delay of game penalty to Kevin Shattenkirk, Palmieri scored from right on the doorstep after a feed from Wayne Simmonds to give New Jersey the early lead.

To the Lightning's credit, they fought right back with some really good shifts in the Devils' zone. Just shy of the midway point of the opening stanza, they were able to find the equalizer.

After a beautiful display of passing and unselfishness from Point and Shattenkirk, Palat fired a one-timer past New Jersey netminder Cory Schneider to even things up at the 9:28 mark of the first.

Tampa Bay took advantage themselves of a New Jersey penalty when Alex Killorn sniped a shot from the slot at 17:15 to make it 2-1.

The score stayed that way until the 6:05 mark of the 2nd period, when New Jersey once again took advantage of a Lightning penalty.

Following a questionable boarding call to Joseph, Jesper Bratt fired home the rebound after a couple of nice saves by McElhinney to tie the score at 2.

The Lightning got their second lead of the night when Point scored at 11:48, but the Devils answered right back to tie and re-take the lead.

29 seconds after the Point goal, Palmieri scored on a deflection of a point shot from Will Butcher. And 59 seconds later, Bratt threw a seemingly harmless shot on the net that got tipped in front for his second tally of the night to make it 4-3 New Jersey.

Schneider made only 16 saves on the 23 shots he saw tonight.
