In Fremont, Ohio, a tragic incident occurred on Sunday (May 18) when a train struck a family, resulting in the deaths of a 58-year-old mother and her 38-year-old daughter. The family, visiting from Fort Wayne, Indiana, was walking on a bridge near the Miles Newton Bridge with two young children when the accident happened. A five-year-old girl is still missing, and a 14-month-old child is in critical condition at a Toledo hospital.
According to Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez, the family was on a bridge marked for no trespassing. The Sandusky River, where the search for the missing child continues, is known for its fishing, drawing visitors to the area. Two dive teams, law enforcement agencies, a drone, and an Ohio State Highway Patrol helicopter are involved in the search efforts.
Mayor Sanchez expressed the community's grief, stating, "It's just been a tragic night here in our community." He urged the public to leave the search to professionals due to the dangers involved. Norfolk Southern, the train company, and the Federal Railroad Administration have extended their sympathies and are cooperating with local authorities in the investigation.
State Representative Gary Click and Senator Bernie Moreno have offered their support during this difficult time.
