Hillsborough Schools Consider Asking for Donations

TAMPA -- The Hillsborough School Board might end up asking the community for money to keep it out of state receivership.

School Superintendent Addison Davis suggested the board might reach out to supporters in the business community for $10 million dollars to fill a hole as the board rushes to finalize a financial plan to send to state Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran.

The board is moving around several pieces of the puzzle as it tries to cover a $107 million shortfall and bring its reserve back to at least two percent, as required by state law. The availability of emergency federal funds meant for schools ... so-called ESSER, ESSER 2 and ESSER 3 money... will affect how much the board has to come up with.

School board member Melissa Snively says paid for all her board-related travel expenses herself. Board member Stacy Hahn says the district's money management issues are a letdown to voters who passed a half-cent sales tax to support the district.

The school board will meet again Tuesday (11th) to approve the plan.
