New Report Highlights Link Between Red-Light Camera Companies & Politicians

A new ABC Action News report highlighted several controversial findings involving red-light cameras, from an increase in crashes at intersections using the cameras to links between contractors and local politicians who determine their usage.

According to a 2018 report by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, intersections with red-light cameras saw a 15% increase in crashes after the cameras were installed. Additionally, a 2019 study by AAA found deaths caused by drivers running red lights reached a 10-year high in 2017, with a 28% increase since 2012.

Despite the growing evidence that red-light cameras may hurt driver safety, the revenue generated from them has become a significant source of funding for local governments. It's estimated that Florida drivers paid more than $100 million in traffic fines due to the cameras.

Also revealed in the report is the amount of political donations American Traffic Solutions — the largest red-light vendor in Florida — contributed to candidates across the state. The contractor has offered up more than $1.8 million for both Republicans and Democrats over the past twelve years.
