CEO Spotlight: Tampa General Hospital

John D. Couris is the president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital, a nationally renowned nonprofit academic health system. As a recognized leader in the health care industry, Couris has achieved success through innovation, operational excellence, technological integration, and strategic collaborations.

Under Couris’ leadership, Tampa General Hospital has partnered with GE Healthcare to advance care coordination, help enhance patient safety and quality, and improve efficiency with a new care coordination center. The center will harness artificial intelligence, predictive analytical modeling, and human intelligence to drive operational excellence and help improve the experience and outcomes for patients, families and hospital staff. In addition, Couris co-led a new partnership with USF Health and the institution’s private practice physicians’ group to build a new clinical platform and physicians’ collaborative designed to strengthen health care for the Tampa Bay region.

Prior to joining Tampa General Hospital in 2017, Couris served for seven years as president and chief executive officer of Jupiter Health and Jupiter Medical Center, the region’s leading health system. During his tenure, the organization completed over $100 million in capital and operation improvements and led the organization to establish a $300 million campaign to meet the region’s growing demand for critical health services, such as advanced cardiac care, expanded pediatric services and comprehensive stroke care. Under Couris’ leadership, Jupiter Medical Center received numerous accolades for hospital quality, safety, and patient satisfaction, placing the organization in the top 10% within the state of Florida and the top 20% in the nation.

Couris’ career began at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of the premier academic medical centers in the country. From there, he spent the next ten years with BayCare Health System, rising from vice president of ambulatory care at Morton Plant Mease Health Care in Clearwater to chief operating officer.Throughout his over twenty-year career, John has demonstrated a unique ability to lead organizations and empower individuals to reach their fullest potential, while generating high levels of return on investment and developing innovative programs that consistently deliver on results.

Couris is active in numerous community and philanthropic activities and serves on the board of the Florida Hospital Association, the Safety Net Hospital Alliance of Florida, the Tampa Bay Partnership, the Economic Development Council, the Valspar PGA Tournament and Loggerhead Marinelife Center. In addition, he is the immediate past chairman of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, the state’s largest regional theatre, MyClinic (a free clinic for the uninsured) and the North Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce. He is also amember of the Young President’s Organization (YPO), along with many national health associations.

Couris is a graduate of Boston University and holds a Master of Science in Management from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in business administration at the University of South Florida Muma College of Business.Couris resides in Tampa, Florida, with his wife and two children.
