Florida Study Shows Probiotics Help Farm Fish, Too

SARASOTA, FL (WFLA News) -- A lot of people use probiotics to stay healthy. Now a new Florida study says they're also good for fish raised in farms.

Scientists at Mote Marine Lab in Sarasota used probiotics in feed and water given to snook larvae, and found the survival rate was two and a half times that of larvae that didn't get the good bacteria. The findings could help commercial fish farmers keep more of their stock alive to adulthood... and make more money.

Dr. Andrea Tarnecki ran the study. She says fish farms are looking for alternatives, because bad bacteria are developing resistance, and consumers don't like to eat food that was raised with antibiotics.
