Hillsborough Expanding Crossing Guard Program

Tampa, Fla.-(Newsradio WFLA)-The Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners has approved Commissioner Stacy White's proposal to expand and fund the school crossing guard program to include middle schools. The move makes Hillsborough the first county in Florida to have crossing guards at middle schools.

The expansion will have the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office hiring 141 new crossing guards, 24 new supervisors and two community service aides to oversee the program. The program will be implemented in a three-year phase, allowing for recruiting and hiring.

The S.O.'s Motor and Traffic Unit will continue to monitor school zones until the new positions are filled.
