Cops: Man Drove Drunk to His Death Into Tampa Canal

Tampa, Fla. (Newsradio WFLA) - The man whose body was found in a pond Friday had driven drunk through a fence to wind up there, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. Deputies located video surveillance of the incident in which they said that Gustavo Bonifacio de la Cruz drove west on Prince Street West and through a locked gate into a retention pond at about 3:40 a.m. A neighbor saw the rear end of the car at around 8:30 a.m. and called 911, according to a news release from the HCSO. Deputies suspect alcohol as a factor in the crash.
