Wrong-Way Driver Killed, Deputy Injured in Pinellas County Crash

Pinellas Park, Fla. - News Radio WFLA - A wrong-way driver is dead after colliding head-on with another driver stopped at an intersection in Pinellas Park just after 3am Thursday morning.

An off-duty Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputy, also stopped at the intersection, has minor injuries after detectives say 28-year-old Brittney Hunter was driving south in the northbound lanes on 166th street north when the crash happened.

Hunter reportedly drove head-on into a Chevy Equinox driven by 74-year-old Richard Peterson, who was stopped at the intersection with 126th Avenue North. The impact of the crash pushed his car into the patrol car driven by Deputy Jonathan Ferguson, who had just completed his shift.

Peterson's car flipped, but he was not seriously hurt.

Hunter, the wrong-way driver, died at the scene from her injuries. Detectives believe impairment may be a factor in the crash but they will have to wait for toxicology results following an autopsy.

Peterson and Deputy Ferguson were treated and released at a nearby hospital.
