Fatal Crash Closes I-75 in Riverview Area

Riverview, Fla. (Newsradio WFLA) - A drunk driver caused a three-vehicle crash on I-75 early Sunday that killed a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

George Edward Evans, III, was impaired, state troopers said, when he stopped his pickup truck on the inside travel lane of southbound I-75 near Mile Marker 254 at about 4:40 a.m. for some reason. A car came along and struck the pickup, leaving both vehicles crashed in the roadway, according to a crash report from the FHP.

Wesley Weysham, Jr. stopped to see if anyone in the two crashed vehicles needed help, when a car struck and killed him, troopers said. Weysham died at the scene. The driver of the car that struck Evans's pickup truck, Veronica Gonzalez, 31, suffered serious injuries. Evans and the driver of the third vehicle had only minor injuries, the crash report said.

Charges are pending against Evans, who is 32.
