How to secure your twitter account, and what to do if hacked

Sadly, twitter hacking is a fairly normal occurrence, from celebrities to gamers and even politicians. Keeping your account secure is key.

To help keep your account secure, twitter recommend the following best practices:

  • Use a strong password that you don’t reuse on other websites.
  • Use login verification.
  • Require email and phone number to request a reset password link or code.
  • Be cautious of suspicious links and always make sure you’re on twitter.com before you enter your login information.
  • Never give your username and password out to third parties, especially those promising to get you followers, make you money, or verify you.
  • Make sure your computer software, including your browser, is up-to-date with the most recent upgrades and anti-virus software.
  • Check to see if your account has been compromised.
  • Enable two step verification on your accounts, this will send you a text or email to confirm the login. This will tip you off to someone having your password.

If you think you've been hacked and you're unable to log in with your username and password, please take the following two steps:

Request a password reset

Reset your password by requesting an email from the twitter password reset form. Try entering both your username and email address, and be sure to check for the reset email at the address associated with your Twitter account.

If you're able to log in after the password reset, please check if you raccount has been compromised and re-secure your account.

Contact Twitter Support if you still require assistance

If you still can't log in, contact twitter by submitting a Support request. Please choose "Hacked account" from the list of options. Be sure to use the email address you associated with the hacked Twitter account; they will then send additional information and instructions to that email address.
