Fewer Arrests in Calmer "Student Day" at Florida State Fair in Tampa

Tampa, Fla. (Newsradio WFLA) - Student Day at the Florida State Fair ended peacefully with fewer arrests than last year's event, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. The HCSO worked with Tampa Police, the Florida State Fair Authority and Hillsborough County schools in a concerted effort to make Student Day safer.

Only 36 people had to be ejected from the fair Friday, compared to 47 in 2018, according to a news release from the HCSO. Law enforcers made only one arrest, compared to seven in 2018. While kicking Raheem Williams, 14, out of the fair, they discovered that he had several outstanding charges unrelated to the fair.

"We couldn't have asked for a better outcome at this year's Student Day," the news release quoted Sheriff Chad Chronister as saying. "This significant drop in incidents is the result of months of hard work and planning by our deputies and the Florida State Fair."
