DeSantis Suspends Broward Sheriff Over Parkland

FORT LAUDERDALE (970 WFLA) -- Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel is off the job. Governor Ron DeSantis flew to Fort Lauderdale to announce that he's suspending the sheriff, over his agency's response to the Parkland massacre.

"I have no interest in dancing on Scott Israel's political grave... suffice it to say that the (Stoneman Douglas) massacre might never have happened, had Broward had better leadership" in the sheriff's office, DeSantis said.

The new sheriff is Gregory Tony, a sergeant with the Coral Springs police force. Now-former sheriff Scott Israel held his own news conference after the governor's announcement... saying his suspension was about "politics, not Parkland." Israel says he intends to fight his suspension in the courts and before the Florida Senate.

Parents of Parkland shooting victims joined DeSantis at the news conference to praise him for canning Israel.
