Pinellas Deputy Resigns Over Bomb Joke

Largo,Fla.(970 WFLA)- What was meant as a joke has a Pinellas County Deputy out of a job.  Deputy James Piper resigned yesterday after he admitted to sending a fake bomb to a coworker.

When Lieutenant Joseph Gerretz opened the package that Piper sent him, Gerretz told his supervisor, who called the bomb squad and evacuated part of the Sheriff's Administration Building on Ulmerton Road.

The box was insulated with plastic packaging and contained a red cylinder shaped object with protruding wires. A handwritten note with the word "Boom" was included inside the package.

Piper had been with the department for more than 30 years.
