A former Pinellas Sheriff's deputy arrested after bomb hoax

The box which arrived at the Pinellas Sheriff's Office, addressed to a deputy on Tuesday, contained a toy bomb and a piece of paper with the word "BOOM" written on it.

Part of sheriff's office was evacuated and the SWAT team investigated.

Turns out, the package was sent by deputy James Piper as a joke to a friend and fellow deputy.  But it was no laughing matter.  Piper resigned Tuesday.

Now, the 59-year-old is charged with planting a hoax bomb, which is a second degree felony.
