Tampa, Fla.-(Newsradio 970 WFLA)-Tampa Republican State Representative Jackie Toledo has introduced legislation aimed at taking a bite out of distracted driving. Toledo, who represents Florida House District 60, says her bill is aimed at saving lives and making the roads safe.
The proposed bill would make texting and driving and talking on a cell phone without a hands free device a primary offense. As a primary offense, law officers would be allowed to pull over Florida drivers spotted texting or talking on a phone.
Toledo says the inspiration for her bill comes from the death of 9 year-old Logan Scherer of Riverview. The boy was killed in 2016 when a distracted driver slammed into the back of the family's SUV on Interstate 75.
Representative Toledo's bill has the backing of Hillsborough County School District Superintendent Jeff Eakins.
