Tampa, Fla.-(Newsradio 970 WFLA)-The New York Yankee family is mourning the passing of Joan Steinbrenner, who was married to club owner George Steinbrenner for over 50 years.
According to a statement released by the team, Steinbrenner died at the age of 83 at her home in Tampa today. The Steinbrenners called Tampa home for many years and the Yankees spring training home is located here.
Joan married George in 1956, and is survived by four children who are all general partners with the team. From 1973 until his death in 2010, George Steinbrenner was the principal owner and managing partner of the team, the longest such stretch in franchise history.
