Eyes on the Wheel... Or The Buzzer Goes Off

LAKELAND (970 WFLA) -- A team of students at Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland is working on technology that COULD prevent drowsy and distracted driving in the future. They may have found a way to keep drivers' eyes focused on the road.

Senior Lina Brihoum of Orlando says they started with another paper outlning a way to monitor drivers who nod off, and decided to expand to those who are looking at their phones, or eating, or talking to passengers.

They're putting software on a a microcomputer tied to a camera and a buzzer. When the driver nods off or looks away, the buzzer goes off. Brihoum says they hope to develop software that could become part of an app for smartphones.
