Florida Health Dept. Makes Push for Hep A Vaccine

TALLAHASSEE (970 WFLA) -- After an increase in cases around the state, including the Tampa Bay area, the state health department is warning people about Hepatitis A.

More than six hundred people got vaccinated after a worker at Hamburger Mary's restaurant in Ybor City came down with Hepatitis A. Now because of that case and others around Florida, the state is urging many groups of people to get vaccinated.

The Department of Health says that since January, 385 infections have been reported statewide. That's more than three times the five year average of 126. The state says Hep A vaccine is recommended for several categories, including homeless people, recreational drug users, and people with liver disease. There's no cure once sump[toms appear, but most infected patients recover.
