CLEARWATER (970 WFLA) -- Today (19th) and tomorrow, the Salvation Army of Pinellas County is handing out more than ten thousand turkeys and food baskets to people who registered for assistance last month.
Major Ted Morris heads the Salvation Army in Upper Pinellas. He says an anonymous donor has supported the Thanksgiving food drive for 25 years. "She started off by just bringing turkeys in the trunk of her car... and had such joy in doing this that she decided to do this every year," Morris said.
Publix supermarkets are also helping out with Thanksgiving meals.
More than 200 volunteers are distributing more than 90 tons of food. Morris says recipients who signed up in October can just drive up and pick up their dinners. It happens today at Salvation Army offices in Clearwater and St. Petersburg, and tomorrow in Tarpon Springs.
After Thanksgiving, Morris says the Salvation Army will be out asking for Christmas contributions. In addition to the red kettles and bell ringers, they'll have "Angel Trees" set up at various locations. The Angel Tree and Silver Bells programs allow givers to support Christmas presents for children and seniors.
