Bartow Man Beaten And Shot: Convicted Felon On The Run

Bartow, Fla. (970 WFLA)-Bartow Police are searching for a suspect accused of attacking and shooting another man. 

Police say during a birthday party an argument between 31 year old Christopher Downs and 26 year old William Cooper turned violent.  According to the police report, Cooper left the party,  but was confronted by Downs who fired several shots from a handgun, one round hitting Cooper in the back. Downs allegedly started hitting Cooper over the head as he lay in the street. 

When a crowd began to gather,  downs and another man jumped inside a white pick up and sped away. Cooper is at Lakeland Regional in stable condition. 

Detectives say Downs is facing numerous charges including aggravated battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm in public and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
