In his letter to Lakeland's mayor and city commissioners, Michael Dunn submitted his resignation with, quote, "a heavy heart", and thanked the residents for giving him "the opportunity to serve".
Dunn was indicted by a grand jury on second degree murder charges for the shooting death of Cristobal Lopez, a man Dunn says lifted a hatchet from Dunn's military surplus store in Lakeland.
Store surveillance video shows Dunn grabbing Lopez by the front door, then firing a fatal shot.
Meantime, Dunn was in court for another brief court appearance, this time with his attorney present. He's being held without bond, but there could be a bond hearing this week.
