St. Pete Crash Involving Dump Truck Kills Driver

St. Petersburg, Fla. (970 WFLA) - A collision on I-275 collected a total of three cars and killed one of the drivers Friday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Minihla Johnson, 17, of St. Petersburg drove on the Interstate alongside a dump truck driven by Marco Gonzalez-Vargas, 52, of Riverview, when the two collided and both vehicles ran off the road into the median, according to a news release from the FHP. The dump truck hit the guardrail and overturned. It continued into the southbound lanes of I-275, struck a third vehicle and spilled a load of dirt across the roadway. Gonzalez-Vargas died later from his injuries.

Johnson's car struck a tree. She and two 7-year-old children in the car suffered only minor injuries. The two people in the third vehicle were unhurt. Charges in the case are pending, the FHP said.
