5 Miles of Sidewalk in New Polk County Budget

BARTOW (970 WFLA) -- When Polk County commissioners take their final vote on next year's budget tonight (Monday 9/17_, it'll include more than two million dollars for new sidewalks, translating to 12 different projects and five total miles.

Deputy county manager Bill Beasley says an advisory committee on sidewalks made up of staffers and citizens is helping identify corridors that need them most.

Criteria include whether a location has had accidents or fatalities, is near schools or parks, or would connect other stretches of sidewalk.

This list was trimmed down from 66 proposals... which would have cost more than 12 million dollars.

Beasley says other communities in Florida are looking to Polk County's sidewalk committee as an example of good planning.
