Hurricane Helene Now Packing 110 MPH Winds

Miami, Fla. (970 WFLA)-At 11:00 AM EDT, the eye of Hurricane Helene was located near latitude 16.5 North, longitude 34.3 West, about 670 miles west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands, and about 1550 miles south-southwest of the Azores. 

Helene is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph. This motion is expected to continue today with a turn toward the north-northwest and northward thereafter.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 110 mph with higher gusts.  Gradual weakening should begin tonight, and Helene is forecast to become a tropical storm on Thursday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles(220 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 966 mb (28.53 inches).
